Hillsborouh County, Florida-- The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) plans to unveil a new pedestrian awareness campaign on Monday, July 30.
This four-week pilot campaign will kick off in Hillsborough and Miami-Dade counties, all with the goal of increasing public awareness regarding pedestrian safety, said FDOT in a release about the campaign.
As part of FDOT Secretary Prasad's ongoing initiative to reduce bicycle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities, the message "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow...Safety Doesn't Happen By Accident" will go out via television, social media, transit advertising, and local education and enforcement activities.
FODT provided some interesting facts to explain the purpose of "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow,":
- 22.7% of all traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries involve pedestrians and bicyclists
- 48% of pedestrians are killed when crossing the road, but not at an intersection
- 43% of pedestrian traffic fatalities occur at night on illuminated streets
- Alcohol is a factor in just over 40% of all pedestrian fatalities
